As the dust settles on the recent midterm elections, students in Plano Independent School District (ISD) are returning to their classes and focusing on their studies. However, the heated political climate leading up to the elections has left many students feeling engaged and energized about the future.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Plano ISD Student Council, nearly 60% of students said they followed the elections closely and almost half said they discussed the candidates and issues with their friends and family.
"I think it's important for young people to be involved in the political process," said Alice, a senior at Plano West Senior High School. "We're the ones who are going to be affected by the decisions made by our elected officials, so it's crucial that we make our voices heard."
The survey also found that a significant number of students reported being motivated to get involved in political activism and community service.
"I definitely feel more motivated to make a difference after the elections," said Jake, a junior at Plano East Senior High School. "I'm looking for ways to get involved in my community and make sure that my voice is heard on the issues that matter to me."
These sentiments were echoed by Plano ISD Superintendent Sara Bonser, who said she was proud of the students' engagement and dedication to making a positive impact.
"Our students are the future leaders of our community and it's encouraging to see them taking an active interest in the political process," Bonser said. "At Plano ISD, we strive to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for success in college and their careers, and that includes teaching them the importance of being engaged and informed citizens."
Overall, the midterm elections have sparked a renewed sense of enthusiasm and civic responsibility among Plano ISD students. As they continue to navigate the challenges of high school and look ahead to the future, it's clear that many are determined to make their voices heard and play a active role in shaping the world around them.
